私が海外の蒸気機関車（SL=Steam Locomotive）を本格的ｚに追いかけるようになったのは、仕事の関係で85年にニューヨークへ赴任したのがきっかけです。クルマ社会とは言え、広大なアメリカ合衆国には、熱心なボランティアの人たちを中心とした保存活動により、80を超える保存・観光鉄道で蒸気機関車が運転されています。 そして93年、２度目のアメリカ赴任。美しく整備された保存蒸機には少々食傷気味になった私は、今度は「本物の蒸機」を求めて、家内とともにラテン・アメリカ諸国へ。これらの国々でも、急速なモータリゼーションの進行によって鉄道自体の存続が危ぶまれていますが、まだまだ沿線に住む人たちの生活と密着した蒸気機関車の姿に出会うことが出来ます。 それぞれの国によって政治・経済的立場は大きく異なりますが、蒸気機関車とそれを取り巻く人、支える人たちの熱い眼差しはどこでも同じ。新たな出会いを求めて、私たちの蒸気機関車の旅は続きます。 My passion for steam locomotives began in 1985, when my business relocated me from Tokyo to New York for 3 years. I was greatly impressed by the many well preserved steam locomotives, thanks to dedicated efforts by hardworking volunteers. I took the opportunity to travel throughout the United States, searching for different steam trains. In 1993, after a 5-year hiatus back in Tokyo, I got another overseas business assignment, in Los Angeles. By then, I was growing tired of the well preserved U.S. trains that were not real "workers". It was like watching a lion in a cage. My wife Atsuko, and I started visiting Latin American countries(Cuba, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador, Chile and Argentina) in pursuit of real "working" steam locomotives. Although the raison d'e^tre for railroads has succumbed to rapid advances of motorization, the steam-hauled trains remain the backbone of local transportation in isolated areas in these countries. Despite vast economic and political differences between the U.S. and its Latin American neighbors, we found the same warmth and dedication in supporting these old steam "work horses". I am delighted to share some of our sights with you in the following pages.
